The Call of the Wild

Oct 12, 2026 | Dan Wheeler

Can I stowaway to Alaska? That was my question when we sold a Bridgeport J Head Vertical Mill to an oil tanker that travels back and forth from Alaska to Long Beach, California. I could just picture our machine traveling up the West Coast as the sunny beaches turn to rocky shores in Oregon, past British Colombia and some orca whales on to the arctic cold waters of Alaska. It all seemed a little Jack London to me, hence this blog's title: The Call of the Wild.

We get some wild calls here at Wheeler Machinery Sales, and this one, for the oil tanker, was one of them. Could we match them with the right mill in the next six days, the only days they would be docked at the Port of Long Beach and they could get the mill aboard? Yes, yes, we could.

The Bridgeport J Head Vertical Mill was a great choice for this customer, given its lower price point and reliability and relative ease of use. While other mills have more features, for a customer only looking to make parts on an as-needed basis instead of as a main part of their business or trade, this Bridgeport met the demands and budget.

Alas, the ship left with me still here in Pomona, but we were kindly sent some nice photos of the mill aboard the ship, taking in the views before being lowered below deck. We are thrilled to have a Wheeler machine out there on the open seas.
